Songs for a New World
“The beginning of everything. One of the greatest group of people I have ever worked with in my life. The wonderful Daisy Prince helmed the project with care and humor. My childhood pal, Jason Robert Brown, was dazzling us daily with his compositions and vocal arrangements. And at any given moment, I got to witness my favorite performers, Jessica Molaskey, Brooks Ashmanskas and Billy Porter interpret that spectacular music. Rehearsal was heaven on Earth.”
Brooks Ashmanskas, Andrea Burns, Hunter Foster & More Set in Reading of James Hindman’s THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT, 4/22
“Brooks Ashmanskas (Tony nom. Fame Becomes Me; The Producers), Andréa Burns (The Nance; In The Heights), Hunter Foster (Hands On a Hard Body; Tony nom. Little Shop of Horrors), Jessica Molaskey (A Man Of No Importance, Sunday in the Park with George, Parade) , Martin Moran (All The Rage; Obie Award, The Tricky Part), Kelsey Fowler (Mary Poppins, Sunday In The Park With George) and Alex Sheitinger (Mary Poppins, Beauty And The Beast) will perform in a reading of a new play, THE Drama Department by James Hindman, directed by Peter Flynn (Our Town, On the 20th Century, Chess). The reading is set for April 22, 2013 at Second Stage Theatre, by invitation only.
Based on a true story, THE Drama Department tells the story a mid-west high school which takes great pride in its Debate & Dramatics teacher until the son of the school board president isn’t cast as the lead in the school musical. Slowly and insidiously rumors are spread to create dissent and scandal as we watch loyal friends, students, and teachers turn against him in this sharp and gripping comedy of suspicion and personal integrity.”

The World Was Dancing (from Songs for a New World)
by Jason Robert Brown
Performed by Andrea Burns, Brooks Ashmanskas, Jessica Molaskey, and Ty TaylorI think this is one of Brown’s best songs, and it doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves. (Excuse the 1990s orchestrations.)
